Challenge
People with visual impairments or difficulty reading subtitles had for years been excluded from the full cinema experience. Existing solutions required special equipment or the presence of an assistant, and the availability of screenings was random and unpredictable.
Project goals
- Building a central audio-description library available to cinemas and cultural institutions.
- Enabling self-service ordering of audio description for specific screenings.
- Gathering information about accommodations: extended subtitles and Polish Sign Language (PJM) interpreting.
- Reducing the organisation of accessible screenings to a minimum of formalities.
- Meeting WCAG digital accessibility standards.
Films in the library
The audio-description library covers Polish and foreign films from 38 countries of production, from cinema classics to the latest premieres, ready to order for any screening.
Festivals and film institutions
The platform supports the Zobacz Kino Coalition, which brings together Poland's largest film festivals.
Supporting institutions
The Kino Dostępne library was created with the support of four public institutions: PISF, NCK, MKiDN and PFRON.
Result

Web app with a film library
The system lets cinemas and festivals set up accounts on their own, browse the database and order audio description for a specific screening with no intermediaries and at no extra cost.

Accommodations management panel
Every film in the library gathers information not only about audio description, but also about extended subtitles and PJM interpreting, all in one place, with contact details for the rights holder.

Website
A clear, responsive platform presenting the capabilities of the app and the film library, designed to be itself an example of the digital accessibility it promotes.
Our goal was to create an audio-description library and a website that presents the app's capabilities in a simple and intuitive way and supports the mission of the Kino Dostępne Foundation by making film culture available to all audiences.
