Challenge
Calculating antibiotic doses for children is a process where precision and up-to-date data are critical, and a mistake can have direct health consequences. Paediatricians needed a reliable tool that accounts for the child's body weight, the type of infection and the packaging available on a specific market, without having to recalculate by hand and cross-check across multiple sources. An additional challenge was the scale of the undertaking. The solution was to be deployed across different countries, which required accounting for local regulations, different versions of medicinal products and the specific procedures in force on individual markets.
Project goals
- Building a web app for fast, error-free antibiotic dose calculation for paediatric patients.
- Automatically accounting for body weight, type of infection and therapeutic recommendations.
- Basing the algorithms solely on data from the Summaries of Product Characteristics (SmPC).
- Ensuring compliance with Class I Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) requirements under the MDR.
- Adapting the app to the regulatory and registration requirements in force across more than 20 global markets.
- Building an architecture that lets product and packaging variants be managed separately for each market from a single system.
How it works

The tool automatically accounts for the product forms and variants available on the given market.

Set the patient's weight
The child's body weight is the basis for calculating the correct dosing in line with therapeutic recommendations.

Specify the dose
Choose the appropriate indication or dosing scheme. The calculator factors in the treatment parameters and computes the recommended amount of medicine.
Step 4
Confirm and check the result
Get a ready recommendation covering the dosing, frequency of administration and the number of packages needed to complete the therapy.
In SaMD-class products there's no room for compromise. Every algorithm, every dose value, every data update has to be documented and verifiable. Our role was to build a system a doctor can trust and that meets these requirements regardless of the market it operates in.
